Jack started working at Egger with no payroll experience at all. It was difficult through COVID and being furloughed but Jack still attended every remote lesson and he progressed in his qualification. Jack did struggle with the multiple choice question and role simulation part of the end point assessment, but he attended revision sessions every week and he also did revision in his own time. Jack was happy to pass his exams and is now a respected team member at Egger.

Jack’s Training Advisor, Sarah Johnson nominated Jack for our Learner Recognition Award because of his dedication to his apprenticeship and he was always going the extra mile to work towards passing his qualification. When we asked Jack to provide feedback on his programme he said.

” A short time after my apprenticeship began, I knew it was for me. I like the office style work environment and was made to feel like a very valued member of the company. I’ve experienced many good things over the course of my two year apprenticeship such as traveling to the company headquarters in Austria, going on many different training courses and team outings.

Throughout my apprenticeship, i had to complete regular assessments and activities with Smart as well as internal and virtual meetings with my training coordinator, Sarah, who was always happy to help and support me, especially during the covid 19 pandemic.

I did find my apprenticeship to be quite challenging as the level of legislative implications and deadlines responsibilities that go with payroll take a lot of time and patience to learn. Over the course of my apprenticeship, I’ve developed my knowledge and application of many core areas of payroll such as processing, employee tax and National Insurance, understanding the different types of pension schemes that go with payroll, and how it applies to the workforce. As well as developing my team working on communication skills at work.

I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome of my course and the teaching I received from my training advisor Sarah at Smart, I would encourage anyone to take up an apprenticeship”

We spoke to Claire Ball, the HR Manager at Egger, who was extremely happy that Jack had been nominated and been crowned the winner of the Apprenticeship Learner Recognition Award 2021.

“Jack started his apprenticeship with EGGER in May 2019, this included on the job learning as well as formal training with SMART over a two-year period. This ended in a permanent position at EGGER as Trainee Payroll Systems / Analytics Coordinator. During Jack’s apprenticeship we faced Covid related challenges which impacted on Jack directly, he had periods working from home and was also on Furlough leave for a few months.  Despite these challenges he continued to persevere with his development.

The Payroll Administrator Level 3 course content was also technical and demanding in some respects and yet Jack continued to show commitment, enthusiasm, and drive to ensure he completed his studies on time.  Jack works as part of our HR and Payroll teams, supporting with regular and ad hoc reporting, analysing data and dealing with Management requests.

Jack has developed excellent interpersonal and technical skills during his apprenticeship and will now develop even further in terms of analytics and people data. He has been a strong addition to our team, he has good overall skills and is a resilient, talented and well-liked employee”
