National apprentice of the Month – March 2016

Apprentice – Cheryl Neal

Training advisor – Clare Haithwaite

Employer – Crown and crossed swords

Story:

Cheryl is coming to the end of her L3 apprenticeship at the Crown and Crossed Swords having already completed her L2 Food and Drink Service Apprenticeship.

Before starting this role Cheryl had been unemployed for some time so it was great for her to get back into work as she has a young family and wanted to be working and able to provide a good life for them.

She had never worked in a restaurant before so this was all new to her and she picked it up very quickly with on the job training and support from her manager and knowledge training with Smart Training.

At the end of her L2 she was promoted and given the position of Supervisor and is now nearly completed her L3 Hospitality Supervision and her L2 Functional skills which was certainly a challenge but now achieved.

Cheryl feels her life has been greatly improved by this experience as she is now employed on full wages with a Supervisor role, in her own words “ I can’t believe the change from when I first started, I was so worried that taking the £3.30 an hour was a risk. But it has been so worth it I would never have this job without starting as an apprentice.”

Cheryl has worked hard and this is now paying off for her, I wish her all the best for her future as it looks bright.

Employer comments:

Victoria Suddick is over the moon with Cheryl, she feels she can fully trust her to run things when she is not there and Cheryl’s adds to the business as she is always coming up with new idea. She has also taken on responsibility for promoting the business using Social media which Victoria did not know how to do previously.
