Job Description:

Whilst completing this intermediate apprenticeship you will undertake learning and development activities to cover:

  • Safely cooking, preparing and finishing a range of dishes with
  • Meat, Poultry, Vegetables, Pasta, Dried Ingredients
  • Learn how to make a range of cakes, sponges and scones
  • Learn how to make a range of sauces
  • Learn how to operate a food safety management system
  • Learn how to keep and maintain a clean and hygienic environment
  • Learn how to cook finish and present dishes to meet the requirements set within the national standards for school meals
  • Effective team working
  • Safe handling of knives

Typically some of the day to day duties will include but not be inclusive of;

  • Cooking, finishing and presenting food
  • Serving service users
  • Cleaning
  • Setting up service rooms
  • Safely storing food
  • Use of the cashless till system
  • Assisting the catering manager to promote meals and increase uptake through projects such as themed days
  • Encourage student users to try new products and have a healthy diet

Major Tasks;
Under the direction of the Catering Manager to assist in 

  • The production of meals
  • Serving of the lunch time meals
  • General kitchen and dining room duties
  • Wash up and clean the kitchen during and after service including equipment, floors and walls
  • Ensure tasks are carried out in line with food hygiene AND health and safety legislation
  • Assist to set up the dining room, tables and service trolley
  • Clean and tidy the dining room after service when required
  • Ensure the safe storage of food provisions, temperature checks are recorded
  • Attend training courses as required
  • Adhere to all policy and procedures and comply with Food Safety legislation
  • Assist the Catering Manager to promote school meals and increase uptake, theme days, parent evening, tasting sessions and other events
  • Encourage students to try new foods and have a healthy diet

Working Environment

  • The school is on one site with 4 main buildings sited alongside the sports field.  The post holder will be required to work across the whole site
  • In the main this post works in a kitchen environment with appropriate heat, ventilation and lighting.  There may be occasional exposure to conditions such as would be found outside; for example travelling for meetings and site visits
  • There will be exposure to cleaning chemicals that have been assessed under COSHH and all food substances including nuts and other allergens

Good standard of Maths and English

This apprenticeship is based in the school kitchen at Arden School in Knowle, Solihull; a large secondary school with 1700 pupils and approximately 200 staff.  Public transport links include trains into Dorridge Station with a 20 minute walk from the station or a local bus from Solihull.  Free parking is available for staff on the school site.
