Learning at Work Week 2026 – Meet Aimi Moir

May 22, 2026

Learning at Work Week 2026 is all about the ‘Many Ways to Learn’. Recognising that personal and professional growth doesn’t just happen in a classroom.

Whether it is through learning by doing, coaching from a supportive tutor, or social learning with colleagues, there are so many paths to building new skills. We know that balancing a qualification with a busy job is a journey full of different experiences, so we asked some of our apprentices to share theirs. These stories highlight the various ways our learners have harnessed their own potential to grow, evolve, and succeed in their roles.

Recently we asked them to share their Apprenticeship journey, looking at the different ways they have picked up new skills and the impact this has had on their career so far.

Meet Aimi Moir, a Appointments Team Administrator at Larwood Health Partnership.

Question 1 – What made you decide to take on an Apprenticeship rather than another route into the role?
I started with Larwood Health Partnership helping with admin for COVID clinics after being made redundant from a 20-year career in Buying. My goal was always to work my way up to ensure that, as a single mum, I could always support myself and my two children. When the Apprenticeship was discussed during a review, I jumped at the chance to help me progress in my role and add to my CV.

Question 2 – What were you hoping to get out of the Apprenticeship when you started?
My main hope was that I would gain skills in how to manage people and to grow in confidence.

Question 3 – Were there any nerves or doubts going in?
I had a lot of self-doubt—wondering if I could do this or if I would be good enough. I think sometimes you just have to believe in yourself and jump in; the course has helped me grow so much in confidence and I am so glad I started it.

Question 4 – What is something you have learned through your Apprenticeship that you have actually used at work?
Early on, we covered learning styles. I used the VAK learning styles method on myself, a new starter, and the current team to understand how they best learn. This allowed me to tailor my teaching and training to suit each person perfectly.

Question 5 – Has there been a moment where something “clicked”?
I realised that I underscore myself and doubt myself too much. After feedback sessions with my manager and tutor, I learned that I am allowed to praise myself, and this has really helped my confidence grow.

Question 6 – How do you fit learning around your day job?
I do most of my learning on a specified study day. On that day, I make sure not to get sucked into day-to-day work—I turn off emails and don’t log into work systems unless necessary. I also keep quick notes of any off-the-job training as it happens so I don’t forget to log it in OneFile later.

Question 7 – What is the most useful support you have had?
My tutor, Gail, has been amazing; I know I can always reach out to her if I am struggling. My manager and colleagues have also been incredible by trusting me to train them and conduct reviews.

Question 8 – What can you do now that you could not do before you started?
I can confidently speak to people of all levels. Previously, the thought of a professional discussion or being put on the spot would have made me an anxious mess. Recently, when a partner came to ask me something while my manager was away, I spoke with total confidence because I knew exactly what I was talking about.

Question 9 – Have you noticed a change in your confidence, your responsibilities, or how others see you at work?
Yes, my confidence has improved a lot. Colleagues I don’t directly work with now trust me to help with issues, and I am being included in more meetings and asked for my opinion on things.

Question 10 – In one sentence, what would you say the Apprenticeship has given you?
A huge boost in confidence and the knowledge to be able to manage myself and other people effectively.

Question 11 – What would you say to someone in your team or sector who is thinking about an Apprenticeship but has not taken the leap yet?
Do it! If I can, then you can. Don’t be scared to better yourself.
