“I have really enjoyed the Apprenticeship with Smart so far. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I was thrown into my job role with very little practical training and even less theoretical training, so I have wanted to improve my theoretical knowledge in the payroll field for years and the team at Smart Training and Recruitment have all been very welcoming and insightful.

I find the 1-to-1 sessions to be very engaging, and this makes learning much easier for me.  I tend to learn best by doing and the team at Smart do try to cater to individual learning styles, which I greatly appreciate. I have particularly enjoyed the practical aspect of my learning so far – I have recently started working on manually calculating payslips.  Although manual calculations are unlikely to be needed in practice due to payroll software automatically calculating and populating payslips, I believe it is still a very useful skill to learn – building confidence and understanding.  Payslips are sometimes questioned by clients and their employees, and an improved understanding of the figures on these payslips and how they are calculated can only be helpful in giving a confident and accurate answer. I have also experienced the very rare situation where I could use manual calculations practically, so, although I am at the beginning of my Apprenticeship, my learning has already directly helped me in my job.

My Apprenticeship has improved my confidence, and I look forward to learning more so that I can provide a better service for our clients.  I would love to be able to give clients more confidence in me by answering queries quickly and organically, rather than answering some queries, then asking them if I can call them back after I have looked into their more complex queries, as I do now.  I believe this will become a reality after I have completed this Apprenticeship.”
